Geocache Description:

The name Burraneer is probably taken from the waterway Burraneer Bay which was named by Surveyor Robert Dixon in 1827. Most of the land was originally purchased by James Wilson in 1862. This land was later sold to Thomas Holt in 1865. The rest of what is now the suburb had been bought by Andrew and Mary Webster in 1858. A section of their holding was later sold to Dominick Dolan in 1865. Burraneer occupies the peninsula on the Port Hacking waterway and includes a part of the inlet to Dolan’s Bay.

The Burraneer peninsula was practically uninhabited in the early years of the century, except for a few Aboriginal camps and houses round the head of the Bay. In 1904 Frank Cridland took out a lease with Holt-Sutherland Company for a five acre 'weekend' blocks on the eastern side of the peninsular. He recalled later that he was regarded as a fanatic for taking up land at such an out landish place as Gunnamatta Bay. A few years later, however, the peninsula, 'sprang into sudden favour as a weekend resort'.

In 1912 local settler Nat Bull purchased acreage from Holt which was later subdivided around Bulls Avenue. Scattered development in the 1920s and 1930s was followed by a post war building boom as a result of the impact that Land Tax had.

The name of the street where this cache begins is Binaville Avenue. It came from the formation of 3 blocks into a subdivision in 1959. One owner asked for the street to be named after his grandmother Sabina, She was known as Bina and one of these properties was her home (Ville) from a German translation.
