Residents in the growing East Dulwich area called a meeting in July 1875 to discuss a 'new and suitable place for divine worship' due to the Congregational Church at Nunhead becoming increasingly crowded. A plot of land on the corner of East Dulwich Grove and Melbourne Grove was purchased for £800. The foundation stone was laid on 14th December 1878.
