San Miniato è una cittadina arroccata su un colle tra Pisa e Firenze. Federico II di Svevia eresse nella città la rocca, sede del suo vicario per la Toscana: per questa origine germanica la città fu chiamata San Miniato al Tedesco. Nel 1622 divenne sede vescovile e si staccò dalla diocesi di Lucca. Per accedere all'accademia militare francese, il giovane Napoleone venne a San Miniato per avere l'attestato di nobiltà della propria famiglia. La città fu ceduta da Firenze a Pisa nel 1925.

San Miniato is a town perched on a hill between Pisa and Florence. Frederick II of Swabia built the fortress in the city, the seat of his vicar for Tuscany: due to this Germanic origin the city was called San Miniato al Tedesco. In 1622 it became a bishopric and separated from the diocese of Lucca. To access the French military academy, the young Napoleon came to San Miniato to obtain his family's certificate of nobility. The city was ceded by Florence to Pisa in 1925.
