Minnelunden med flere bautaer ble offisielt innviet av Hans Majestet Kong Olav 27. mai 1990.

Bakgrunnen var markering av 50-års minnet for kampene i Gratangen 1940, med «Trønderbataljonen», I/IR12 som de sentrale. 25. april 1940 hadde denne avdelinga 34 falne, 63 sårede og 180 soldater tatt til fange i det hardeste slaget utkjempet under det tyske angrepet på Norge.

Gratangen ble særlig hardt rammet i de to månedene slaget om Narvik pågikk, fra 9. april til 8. juni 1940. I alt 56 norske og minst 22 franske soldater falt innenfor kommunens grenser. I tillegg ble 11 sivile drept, de fleste da hurtigruta «Dronning Maud» ble senket i Foldvik 1. mai.

I kommunen finnes i alt 11 bautaer eller minnesmerker over falne og avdelinger som deltok i kampene i 1940.

To avdelinger som deltok i kampene i 1940 har sine minnesmerker her; «Trønderbataljonen» og «Altabataljonen». Også bauta for Kaptein Nyquist, som var en av kompanisjefene i IR12, og Sverre Lie, lærer og stifter av idrettslaget, døde som kurer. En bauta forteller om ni falne fra Gratangen under kampene og i løpet av krigsårene.

The memorial grove with several bautas was officially inaugurated by His Majesty King Olav on 27 May 1990.

The background was marking the 50th anniversary of the battles in Gratangen 1940, with the "Trønderbataljonen", I/IR12 as the central ones. On 25 April 1940, this division had 34 fallen, 63 wounded and 180 soldiers captured in the hardest battle fought during the German attack on Norway.

Gratangen was hit particularly hard during the two months the battle for Narvik was going on, from 9 April to 8 June 1940. A total of 56 Norwegian and at least 22 French soldiers fell within the municipality's borders. In addition, 11 civilians were killed, most of them when the Hurtigruten "Dronning Maud" was sunk in Foldvik on 1 May.

In the municipality there are a total of 11 memorials or memorials to the fallen and units that took part in the fighting in 1940.

Two divisions that took part in the fighting in 1940 have their memorials here; "Trønderbataljonen" and "Altabataljonen". Captain Nyquist, who was one of the company commanders in IR12, and Sverre Lie, teacher and founder of the sports team, also died as couriers. A bauta tells of nine fallen from Gratangen during the fighting and during the war years.

Samtlige av cachene skal være forholdsvis enkle å lokalisere. Du vil med denne serien også få et godt innblikk i geocaching, og noen av de ulike typene geocacher.

Welcome to GeoTour 68°N - 2024-edition (GT4E4)!
This is a series of 20 geocaches placed in and around Lavangen, Gratangen, Harstad and Narvik. The purpose of the series is to show you some of the remnants that the second world war left behind. It will showcase remnants that you can see in the terrain, and stories from the area.

All of the geocaches should be relatively easy to locate. You will with this series get a good insight in to geocaching and some of the different types of geocaches.

In all the geocaches you will find a hole puncher to use in your passport. If you haven’t already got a passport you can download and print it here: PASSPORT

NB! It is important that you do not remove the logbook or holepuncher from the geocaches.
