From the Latin phrase 'omne trium perfectum', all things perfect come in threes. From a young age we are expected to look for things in threes: Goldilocks and the Three Bears; Rock, Paper, Scissors; "Third times the charm"; Genies always grant three wishes; even the Constitution promises life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
The natural world follows this rule - an atom consists of three parts and we all share the same earthly existence: birth, life and death; past, present and future; mind, body and spirit. Everything has a beginning, a middle and an end. In mathematics, a triangle with its three sides and three vertices can be of different types - scalene, isosceles, or equilateral; acute, right, or obtuse.
Our world has three primary colors, we eat three meals a day (sometimes three-course) and we’re either small, medium or large. We adhere to the same red, yellow and green lights of the universal traffic light and in sport we glorify the bronze, silver and gold.
The rule of three even applies to the simplest of learnings: ready, set, go; stop, look and listen; stop, drop and roll; reduce, reuse, recycle; location, location, location.
