FORESTRY FELLING.
Forestry Scotland aim to produce quality timber using the Low Impact Silvicultural Systems (LISS), providing a valuable commodity produced in a sustainable manner.
LISS is a type of woodland management that helps to increase species and structural diversity. It normally causes less rapid change to the landscape and to the physical environment.
CLEAR FELLING
The current system employed under LISS is ‘patch’ clear-felling followed by planting or occasionally natural regeneration. Although clear-felling can appear to have a negative impact on landscape and habitat it is still an important management system.
Clear-felling, to a degree, mimics natural disturbances such as fire or
windblow in a forest and as such allows the forester to alter the even aged
structure of the canopy over a relatively short period of time. The adoption of
a ‘fallow’ period before restocking, (replanting), also creates transient open
habitat that is exploited by several species such as voles, deer, raptors such
as Kestrel, Buzzard and owls.
