Tate Hill Pier is the oldest pier in Whitby. There has been a sea defence here as far back as 1190. The original pier was built by arranging fallen rocks to protect boats in the harbour. The current pier, dating from 1766, was constructed on the remnants of those original rocks.
The anchor displayed on the pier is from an unknown ship. It was caught in the nets of a fishing boat just around the headland at Maw Wyke, and then presented as a gift to the town to mark its nautical heritage.
The pier stands at the bottom of Tate Hill, alongside the sands where the Demeter ran aground in a storm, and Dracula bounded ashore in the form of a huge black dog and disappeared into the foggy night.
The cache is a magnetic nano.
