Welcome to the old burial ground in Broughty Ferry, a hidden gem of local history. This graveyard dates back to before the Reformation, when it was attached to an ancient chapel dedicated to St John the Evangelist. The chapel was destroyed in the 16th century, but the burial ground remained in use until the 19th century. Here you can find some interesting and old gravestones, some of which are over 300 years old. Some notable burials include Thomas Liddell, a shipmaster of Brotty, who died in 1768, and David Liddell, another shipmaster, who erected a poetic memorial for his wife Janet Webster, who died in 1801. You can also see the Guthrie mausoleum, a Gothic structure built in 1834 for the family of James Guthrie, a wealthy merchant and philanthropist.
To find this geocache, you need to look for a small container hidden near the south wall of the burial ground. The cache contains a logbook only. Please sign the logbook and return the cache to its original location. Enjoy your visit and respect this historic site.
