Geocache Description:

14 March 2024, 15:00 - 16:00

Not only is it "Pi Day" (3.14) but the friend who first got me into Geocaching ("____geokatcher") will be visiting from Maine/Massachusetts, so it seemed like a perfect opportunity to host a small "Welcome to Florida" event for her as well as an excuse to eat some pi, I mean pie!

Event will start at 3:09 pm which is 15:00 military time plus 9 minutes (3.14159, get it?) and is located in Lurie Park, also known as the Wounded Warriors Abilities Ranch.  (For more about the park's creation, see the bottom paragraph below). This is a great little neighborhood park honoring veterans, containing lots of exercise equipment (able to facilitate wounded warriors or others with special needs), a small pond-encircling walking trail, restrooms, and a fenced-in dog section.  There are lots of picnic tables, all of which include a wheelchair-accessible corner. Plenty of parking is available, and there's also a playground as well as a Little Free Library (#94414).

In honor of Pi Day, I will have some pie samplings and bottled water, but feel free to bring your own snacks as well.  (No alcoholic beverages or glass containers, please). Also bring any trackables you'd like for sharing, trading or discovering.

There is already one geocache located at the park, and I hope to have at least one other placed & ready to be published on the day of the event. (NOTE: It is scheduled to be published at 2:00 pm).

(Oh, and about the name of the cache--  In keeping with my theme of naming most [but not all] of my geocaches and trackables after songs, the title of this cache is meant to represent not only the song "American Pie" by Don McLean [#1 for four weeks in 1971], but also America's Armed Forces veterans, and of course "Pi Day").

Regarding Lurie Park / Wounded Warriors Abilities Ranch:

Lurie Park is named on behalf of Pinellas County philanthropists Dr. Edward Lurie and his wife Vivian who donated these 10 acres of land to the city of Pinellas Park in 1998. In 2012 the city declared that this land would become the Wounded Warriors Abilities Ranch. The WWAR organization was founded in 2015 by Pinellas Park resident and veteran Mike Delancey, who had been critically injured in a sniper attack during his service in Iraq. The grand opening ceremony was held on September 1, 2018.
