The Datieliao Heritage Trail (打鐵寮古道) is a splendid, serene hiking trail located in rural Daxi (大溪) that runs along a creek. It’s a dog-walker's paradise, and offers many side-trails if you want a more vigorous hike that will take you up to nearby peaks such as 白石山, 石龜坑山, etc. for superb mountain vistas. The basic trail is generally quite flat and easy to navigate, a lovely place for a family outing to enjoy the sounds of nature such as the warbling of Formosan barbets and the shrieks of eagles soaring overhead. This cache is located near a hundred-year-old stone monument which honors the donors who gave money to blaze the trail and build the bridges that span the creek. The names and dollar amounts are now almost completely worn away, but you can still make out some of the numbers, which are astounding in light of today’s runaway inflation. At the bottom of the memorial stone are those who donated a single dollar, which at the time was a significant amount of money. The truly rich benefactors are listed at the top. They gave as much as 5 or 10 dollars, a veritable fortune at the time. This cache is actually located about 20 meters past the memorial stone. You’ll see a giant slab of rock on the side of the trail, with a crevice in it that looks like a small cave. The cache is on an upper part of the wall at the back of the cave, hidden behind a stone. You might need a flashlight to see into the cave. Please return the cache exactly as you found it, and beware of snakes - I found a snakeskin shed inside the cave when I placed the cache!
