Geocache Description:

A church in Whatcote was mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086 but the construction on the present church was started around 1168. A shelter was build at the same time to provide the builders with drink on the site of the now named Royal Oak public house and tradition has it that Oliver Cromwell stayed at the inn before his battle at nearby Edgehill in 1642 and may have used it as his headquarters.

Looking at the east face of the tower you can clearly see the original roof line of the nave which has been considerably lowered. This was probably the result of repairs after a stray German bomb hit the church in 1940 although the practice of lowering the roofs of church buildings was not uncommon due to the outward stresses that the weight of the roof puts on the supporting walls.

Inside the church in the sanctuary is the floor tomb of John Davenport and his wife Catherine. John was the Rector of the church and served for over 70 years. He died aged 101 in the 16th Century; a remarkable achievement when the average life span then was only 35. Sadly, to the west of the tower is the grave of WG Marshall, a soldier of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment who died November 9th 1918 aged 18, just two days before the war ended.

The geocache is not at the listed co-ordinates and there is no need to enter the church to obtain the necessary information. To work out the coordinates you need to answer the following questions, all of which can be found in the church yard by starting at the gate and walking around the outside of the church in a clockwise direction.

  1. On Evelyn’s bench, what two numbers are repeated? = A&B
  2. On the Priests door, how many studs are there above the top hinge? = C
  3. On the west face of the tower is a small arched window. How many separate pieces of glass are there in it? (Include any broken or missing ones). = D&E
  4. Where was Alfred Edward Batesford cremated? Number of letters  = F

The Cache is a short walk away and can be located at;

N(C*3+D)° (F-D). A (E-F) (D+E) WD° (C*2-D). (B-D) (A+D-F) (D+F)

Checksum for all of the digits = 57.

The cache contains only a logbook. Please bring a pen. Tweezers may be helpful.

Please replace the cache exactly as found for the enjoyment of others.
