Please note that this location was once a historic green space and is now a subway pass. The cache has been placed here to showcase a unique and often overlooked part of the city. While it may not offer the scenic views some might prefer, it highlights an intriguing hidden gem.
Roundabouts in cities are a problem. One such roundabout is at the southern end of Waterloo Bridge, where York Road, Waterloo Road, Stamford Street and the approach to Waterloo Bridge all meet. A rather innovative use for the central space was found in the late 1990s when the British Film Institute opened an IMAX Theatre in the roundabout's centre. The IMAX is of circular design to fit the central space and is surrounded by a glass wall, making the building ideal for advertising and displaying films in the theatre. It is an undeniable landmark when approaching from any of the surrounding streets.
The current centre of the roundabout holds a tenuous link to its earlier use. Once, Cuper's Gardens graced this space, one of the many gardens and places of entertainment that dotted the south bank of the river in the 17th, 18th, and early 19th centuries. This historical context may add some depth to the location, as I like to imagine the vibrant past that once thrived here - perhaps not when you realise you're in a damp underpass!
The hidden cache is tucked away under the road via the public subway. Specifically, it's located on the walkway between the west and east sides of Waterloo Bridges over the service road, also known as Charlie Chaplin Walk. To find it, stand on the walkway facing towards the cinema, then carefully examine the clue. If you're still lost, a huge *spoiler alert* clue is here *spoiler alert*.
While this area is perfectly safe, being a main route between the busy Waterloo Station, the cinema, and Southbank, it can get a little spooky at night, so it's best to avoid it then—unless you're feeling brave!
