Riddy Lane follows one of the old routes that ran alongside one of the inner fields of medieval Hitchin. When you loko at it on a map, it is really a continuation of Hollow Lane and used to extend at least to Riddy Hill House, long since demolished, but which stood somewhere between Manor Close and Ninesprings Way. Although not continuous, the pathway can be followed (with kinks). The filed path nature of the lane is recognised in one of the local street names, Riddy Shott, a shott being a term for a field edge. Another medieval term was a furlong, being the name of another road locally, Crow Furlong, off Grays Lane.
Enough history, however. You are cachers, not historians and want to know about the hide. It is hidden along the main path, to one side about 6 feet up. The container is a small (5ml) screw-top tube and contains only a log, so bring a writing instrument. It replaces a hide that eventually disappeared due to residents increasing their security and putting up high fences. Therefore, this has to be associated with a fence. The hiding place is quite obvious when coming from the east, but not from the west. This is a busy path, especially at school times, so beware of muggles.
