Near the summit of Dog Mountain.
This is a steep hike, which gains nearly 3000 feet in 3 miles. But it's lovely, you travel through a white oak forest, then a classic Douglas fir canopy. Emerging from the treeline, you are treated with fantastic views looking up and down the gorge. Near the top you can look south across the river and see Mt Defiance, with Mt Hood beyond. The upper meadows are famous for wildflower blooms-late spring through early summer. Snow usually accumulates at the top in winter. When I placed the cache, there was some snow, so the cache is elevated about 6 feet off the ground.
You will need a Northwest Forest Pass to park at the trailhead, and on the weekends during peak bloom time May-June, a permit is required.
