Geocache Description:

This cache is for the 2024 Calgary Spring Fling Event with the intention that it not be sought out until after 8:00 am Saturday March 30, 2024.

First impressions can be deceiving. But this cache should be easy to find.

A new Mayfair park and bike path came into existence when the city improved the Glenmore Trail interchanges at Elbow Drive and 5th Street. The project's landscaping was completed in 2008.

People enjoy walking or biking along the new path, sitting on the benches, or relaxing on the grass. Please exercise stealth when others are near.

When was the last time you spent a quiet moment just doing nothing – just sitting and looking at the sea or watching the wind blowing the tree limbs, waves rippling on a pond, a flickering candle, or children playing in the park?

—Ralph Marston

The Mayfair Bel-Aire Community Association was registered under the Alberta Societies Act on November 13, 1958 which coincided with much of the original residential construction that spawned across a small piece of farmland that was once considered to be on the outskirts of town.

This legacy formed the foundation of a well-established and evolving community that is especially noted for its robust mixture of handsome mature trees and rich variation of tasteful home architectural designs that range from Mid-18th Century Colonial to Classic 1950s-60s to 21st Century Modern.

To preserve the character and value of our community, the original developer applied legally binding Restrictive Covenants that are registered on title to the majority of lots in Mayfair and Bel-Aire, which “run with the land” and are binding on any future owner of the property.

Since 1958, our quaint neighbourhood, measuring less than one square kilometre and located east of the Glenmore Reservoir and west of Elbow Drive, has matured into 314 dwellings that are “home sweet home” for just over 900 residents, including numerous original homesteaders enjoying their senior years, mature families with high energy teenagers and college-age kids and a growing number of young families.

As residents of Mayfair Bel-Aire, we enjoy stunning beautiful views of the the Elbow Valley and Rocky Mountains and direct access to numerous recreational and outdoor amenities, including the City of Calgary’s Elbow River Pathway, two modern playgrounds, two private tennis courts, an outdoor ice skating rink, outdoor fitness equipment and our unique Participatory Art Wall located at the newly renovated Mayfair Bel Aire Recreation Lane which features two giant chalkboards where we express and share our hopes and dreams with our neighbours.

While the physical size of our community’s footprint is very small relative to the majority of Calgary’s modern pre-planned communities, we view this as an asset in that allows us to pretty much know every corner of our neighbourhood and most of its inhabitants (including numerous wild rabbits, coyotes, deer and the occasional bobcat). As a result, by today’s standards, we are a relatively close-knit community that looks forward to coming together at various MBCA-sponsored events a few times each year, including our Annual Stampede Breakfast, Evening with Neighbours Event and the highly popular Kid’s Halloween Parade (which also attracts its fair share of costumed adults).

Overall, Mayfair Bel-Aire is noted as a place where trees and people grow together.
