Having buzzed through Rai Valley many times on Bumblebee, I noticed that the planter boxes are getting difficult to discover, however, there are now some butterflies to look at. These are associated with:
Butterflies - symbol of transformation, hope and rebirth.
In 2019 local residents comprising of Rai Valley Branch of Rural Women New Zealand, The Cultural and Archives Trust, and The Rai Valley Progress League received funding to build a butterfly enclosure for Adult Learner Week Festival with funding from ACE Adult and Community Education Aotearoa
This enclosure has enabled the community to hatch and rear Monarch Butterflies for release in Rai Valley knowing that the enclosure is safe from predation from the introduced Asian Paper Wasps.
The Rai Valley Branch of Rural Women New Zealand continue to grow the swan plants for the enclosure. This further display of butterfly wings promotes conversation about environmental habitat and care.
Further funding from ACE has allowed the same community groups to raise awareness about the benefits of community engagement and promote accessible learning for all.
The work by the above community members is a display that locals and visitors can be involved with on community land as it is interactive display.
