Hellebores are members of the Helleborus genus and are related to buttercups. Various species may also be called the Christmas Rose (H. niger) and the Lenten rose (H. orientalis hybrids). There are around 20 species of hellebore and most are evergreen, hardy perennials and one of the few plants which flower in winter and early spring, hence the common names. Hybridisation has resulted in the variety of colours seen in gardens, including green, white, yellow and purple. It prefers alkaline soils and shade. hellebores are poisonous, and handling them can cause irritation and dermatitis. Despite this “black hellebore” (H. niger) was used in ancient times to treat conditions including gout and insanity – in mytthology, hellebore was used to cure Heracles of his madness.
