Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the posted coordinates.

Strawberries belong to the genus Fragaria, with the garden fruit not found naturally but instead a hybrid of other species, first developed in France in the 1750s. While there are several strawberry species in Europe, which have been cultivated for years, the garden strawberry is a cross between F. virginiana, and F. chiloensis, from (as their names suggest) eastern North America and Chile respectively.  This produced much larger fruits than seen in the species previously cultivated. Technically, the strawberry is not a berry but an aggregate accessory fruit, and the "seeds" on the outside are actually the ovaries with a seed inside.

The shape and colour of strawberries have long led to an association with love and fertility, linked with Venus, Aphrodite and Freya in different mythologies.  While we associate strawberries and cream with Wimbledon, the combination was created by Thomas Wolsey at the court of King Henry VIII, and possibly served at tennis matches in his palace. He would have used the alpine strawberry, which can still be found in gardens or growing wild. An estimated 28 tonnes of strawberries are served each Wimbledon. In Sweden, strawberries are traditionally eaten at Midsummer. While some people are allergic to strawberries, the protein they react to is believed to be red anthocyanin, found in the ripening fruits. White-fruited cultivars do not cause the same allergic response.
