In the early years of my Husband's life, that old saying "COTTON IS KING" was very true for this area.Ā Someone in your immediate family was (or at sometime in the past) employed in a cotton mill.Ā Now most of the mills are gone!Ā They are either torn down, converted to loft apartments or storage buildings or they may be sitting empty, falling apart or being vandalized on a regular basis.
Startex Mill was such a vital part of this āmill hillā community that the name of the village evolved from the original name of the village: Tucapau (the native American name for the village) to Startex.Ā The local Baptist church still retains the name Tucapau, but it is one of the few things that didnāt convert to the name Startex.
The main part of the mill is gone now, totally demolished years ago.Ā However, the Bleachery is still standing behind the old Post Office as of March 2024.Ā This is where my husband had his first FULL TIME job!Ā He even had a titleā¦.. he was:Ā Starch Boy!Ā They even shouted it like most people do when the call for SUPERMAN or BAT MAN!Ā LOL!
This cache is placed in honor of the thousands of folks who worked countless hours as doffers, weavers, cardroom workers, bobbin turners, or even Starch Boys and all the other jobs in those mills; and left at the end of the shift with cotton dust in their lungs, their hair and all over their clothes.
