Jonathan Crane, aka The Scarecrow was abandoned by his mother and raised by his very cruel great-grandmother. He was picked on and bullied because he was tall and lanky. He was even called, "Scarecrow" by his peers.
He became a star pshchology student at Gotham State University, earned his doctorate and began a career in teaching. However, the university dismissed him due to his unconventional methods. This was his breaking point, and he adopted the guise of the Scarecrow and began working as a "killer-for-hire."
He developed fear-inducing gas that could literally scare a person to death and began tracking down those who had wronged him. No one was safe from his expanding arsenal of fear toxins. Even Batman could fall under their potent spell.
