Geocache Description:

Anacortes was founded by railroad surveyor Amos Bowman in 1879. He named the town to honor his wife, Anne Curtis.

The Anacortes Rail Depot, originally called the Great Northern Depot, was built in 1911. Early on, the Seattle and Northern Railroad provided passenger service, as well as commercial transportation of goods. Passengers rode the rail from 1890 to around 1930, when automobiles became the preferred mode of transportation. The depot at 7th and R continued rail service until 1973. The railroad is no longer operational, but you can see remnants of the old railroad along 6th avenue, near where this cache is located.

Today, the depot is known as the Anacortes Depot Arts and Community Center. At this location the Anacortes Farmer's Market serves the community with local vendors of produce, baked goods, meats and cheese, and wonderful food and art booths. Their motto is, "If you make it, bake it or grow it, bring it down."

The cache is located close to the depot, near some native Madrona trees. Please use stealth, as this is a high muggle area, especially on Saturdays in the summer.

Congrats for FTF to Owensi!!!
