Geocache Description:

Thomas Paine

Thomas Paine (1737-1809) was an English born political philosopher and writer who aided revolutionary causes in America. He famously published the 47 page pamphlet “Common Sense” on January 10, 1776, during a time of uncertainty within the Colonies. His publication was a hit, selling an estimated 500,000 copies and inspiring the Colonies into independence. In the months to follow, Paine also published a series of pamphlets called “American Crisis” further motivating Americans to fight in the revolution and the first to coin the term United States of America. Thomas Paine was buried in his farm (see waypoint) as requested in his will, and sadly, only six people were known to attend the funeral.

The Cottage

Please excuse the appearance of the cottage as it is currently under repair.

Thomas Paine was granted a 277 acres of farmland by the New York State Legislature in 1784 for his contributions to the revolution. The plot of land stretched from present day North Avenue all the way to Larchmont border. Originally, the cottage was located 1500 feet East of the current location (see waypoint). Nearly 100 years after his death, the land went through real estate development and the cottage was saved from demolition by the Huguenot and New Rochelle Historical Association and moved to where it stands today. The cottage was opened as an historic home museum on July 14, 1910 by the HNRHA. The grounds are open to the pubic and is a nice place to walk, explore or even have a picnic. For more information please visit the museum's website here.
