History of the Hammond Woodmar Mall
This location is where the Former Woodmar Mall once Stood- opened in 1954 and closed in 2006 and later demolished for the Building of the Hammond Sportsplex which now sits in front of you built in 2018.
Chicago based developers Landau and Heyman purchase the land back in 1953 and Architect Victor Gruen designed the former mall in a V shape and was once an open format until becoming enclosed. The former major tenant was Carson Pirie Scott and Co at the malls center and they opened in 1954. The Court of Lions opened in 1975 and the section of the mall featured several mini stores within. The Court of Lions was modeled after the one in Granada Spain. The mini mall section The Court of Turtles later opened in 1977 and featured a pond within with cast iron turtle figurines and plant life. The mall went under a renovation in 1987 and completed in 1990. The Mall had everything from restaurants to clothing stores, to a record store, Kay-Bee toy stores, shoe stores, ice cream shoppe, barbershop and hair salon, arcade, Fannie May Chocolate, and a RadioShack. Competition in nearby Cal City River Oaks Mall and to the south at Hobart’s Southlake mall caused Woodmar Mall to see a Decline in sales and eventually the mall was to close its door in 2006 leaving just Carsons behind until the redevelopment announced that a sports complex would be built in 2016 ultimately leading to Carsons closing its door after 64 years of business in 2018 and later being knocked down in 2019.
