MONKEY’S HEAD
Monkey’s Head is an island just off the shore in Costa Rica. It is a popular dive spot. Locals call it Monkey’s Head as it so closely resembles the profile of the head of a monkey.
Monkey's Head es una isla frente a la costa de Costa Rica. Es un lugar popular para bucear. Los lugareños lo llaman Cabeza de Mono porque se parece mucho al perfil de la cabeza de un mono.
ISLANDS/ISLETS
An island is a body of land surrounded by water. There are countless islands around the world, varying in size, climate, and biodiversity. Islands that are less than one acre (approximately 4000 square metres or about 64m X 64m) in size are known as islets.
There are 6 types of islands, classified according to their formation:
• Continental islands are simply unsubmerged parts of the continental shelf that are entirely surrounded by water. They are part of the same continental land near them, which has been surrounded by water, forming the islands.
• Tidal islands are a kind of continental island that is only separated from the mainland during high tide.
• Barrier islands are narrow islands lying parallel to the coastline, separated by a lagoon. They are formed by sediment deposits or coral reefs.
• Coral islands (atolls) are reefs that grow in a ring around an oceanic island.
• Artificial islands are made by humans.
• Oceanic islands (also known as volcanic islands) are formed by the eruptions of underwater volcanoes.
To log this Earthcache, e-mail answers to the following questions to the cache owner.
Question 1: Observe Monkey’s Head from close up on a boat and look at the type of rock. Also look at any land nearby including Papagayo peninsula. Which type of island do you think Monkey’s Head is and why?
Question 2: On which side of Monkey’s Head did you see the highest waves? How high was the spray? Do you think the high spray is from a blowhole or is there some other reason that water from the waves is spraying so high into the air?
Question 3: Do you think Monkey’s Head is an island or an islet?
Question 4. Please post a picture of yourself or a trackable or your GPSr or some personal item near the posted coordinates.

Una isla es una masa de tierra rodeada de agua. Hay innumerables islas en todo el mundo, que varían en tamaño, clima y biodiversidad. Las islas que tienen menos de un acre (aproximadamente 4000 metros cuadrados o aproximadamente 64 mx 64 m) de tamaño se conocen como islotes.
Existen 6 tipos de islas, clasificadas según su formación:
• Las islas continentales son simplemente partes no sumergidas de la plataforma continental que están completamente rodeadas de agua. Forman parte del mismo terreno continental cercano a ellas, que ha sido rodeado por agua, formando las islas.
• Las islas de marea son un tipo de isla continental que solo se separa del continente durante la marea alta.
• Las islas barrera son islas estrechas que se encuentran paralelas a la costa, separadas por una laguna. Están formados por depósitos de sedimentos o arrecifes de coral.
• Las islas de coral (atolones) son arrecifes que crecen en un anillo alrededor de una isla oceánica.
• Las islas artificiales están hechas por humanos.
• Las islas oceánicas (también conocidas como islas volcánicas) se forman por las erupciones de volcanes submarinos.
