I was out at Grant Ranch on a beautiful, early-spring day looking for new caches and enjoying the relatively flat hike. A lot of turkeys were also out doing the same thing! This spot was suggested to me as a possible location for a large ammo can that needs a home, so I came over to check it out. I fear the large pile of wood chunks might become a burn pile at some point, although it's close enough to the nearby trees to make that potentially dangerous. Still, I decided to err on the side of caution and hide something smaller at a burned tree trunk nearby. This burned tree trunk is interesting because despite being totally burned, it appears to be growing new little bay (I think?) sprouts out of the blackened base.
The cache is near the Brush Trail Connector, about 300' off the trail. You can see the (potential) burn pile and the burned trunk behind it from the trail. In the early spring when this cache was placed, the walk was easy. If you get here in the summer or fall when the grass is tall, you can assess whether you want to make the walk before heading out. You're looking for a small plastic jar-type container.
Joseph D. Grant hours are 8:00am to sunset. Parking is $6 in the main parking lot or you can park in the free lot across the street if you want to save some money and add a mile or two to your hike. Happy hunting!
