Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the posted coordinates.

Rhododendron is a genus of plants ranging in size from small bushes to large trees. It includes both deciduous and evergreen species, with azeleas making up two subgenera. While most species are native to Southeast Asia and the Himalayas, they are also found in Europe, North America and Australia. The name is derived from the ancient Greek for Rose tree. In the UK they were mainly imported as ornamental garden plants, however one species, Rhododendron ponticum has become invasive, being the purple species often seen in woodland areas. In Beacon Hill Country park, a few miles from this cache, there is a labyrinth set within a patch of these.

Most Rhododendrons prefer quite acidic soil for successful growth, although there are parasitic species. Some species are toxic due to the presence of grayanotoxin. There are Ancient Greek and Roman stories of soldiers behaving oddly or dying from the consumption of honey made from the nectar of rhododendrons and azaleas. Despite this, Rhododendron flowers are considered edible in Nepal, and are often pickled, with drinks made from the flower juice. In North America, the leaves of three species are used to brew “Labrador tea” and traditional medicines. However, excessive consumption has been linked to vomiting, paralysis and death.

Rhododendrons (specifically Rhododendron arboreum) are the national flower of Nepal, and other species are the state flowers of Washington and West Virginia in the USA and several states in India, as well as Kashmir. In the language of flowers, it signals danger and to beware.
