Masterwort is the name given to several species of plant in the genus of Astrantia. Other common names include melancholy gentleman and Hattie’s pincushion. They are native to Southern, Central and Eastern Europe, but are a commonly used herbaceous perennial in gardens. Pictured is Astrantia maxima, largest masterwort, native to the Caucasus, which was introduced to Britain in 1804. It can reach 90 cm in height and has star shaped flower heads, with toothed bracts around the central flower cluster. It blooms from late spring to early summer, preferring moist soil.
They should not be confused with the unrelated Peucedanum ostruthium, also known as masterwort, used as a flavouring in various liqueurs and as a herbal medicine. The leaves of Astrantia species are however used as a traditional remedy for gastrointestinal problems.
