Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the posted coordinates.

The common bluebell, Hyacinthoides non-scripta, is one of the most beloved native plants in Britain. While it is found in fields and hedgerows, it is at its most spectacular when forming carpets of blue in woodland in mid spring. These drifts of flowers are a good indication of ancient woodland (and can be observed in various places in this series at the right time of year). The native bluebell is under pressure from the introduced Spanish bluebell – the native species has the bell-shaped flowers growing from one side of the stem, which droops, while the Spanish invader is more vertical, with flowers all around the stem. The Native bluebell is protested by law, and it is illegal to dig up or trade in wild bulbs, and care should be taken to avoid trampling it. Note in Scotland that “bluebell” can refer to Campanula rotundifolia, called the harebell elsewhere.

There are many folklore tales of bluebells, which are often associated with fairies and magic. Walking on bluebells is unlucky, while if you pick one you will be led astray by fairies and become lost. The ringing of bluebells is said to summon fairies; in some variations hearing one ring heralds the visit of an evil fairy and your subsequent death. In contrast, wearing a wreath of bluebells compels you to tell only truth, while in the language of flowers it represents humility, constancy, gratitude and everlasting love.

Bluebells are toxic, but historically their sap was used as a glue used in bookbinding and fletching, while the bulbs gave the starch used in Elizabethan ruffs.
