Geocache Description:

The cache is at the listed coordinates, but the container is not-so-easy to open. You’ll have to dip your toe into becoming a Duxbury historian first.

About the Cushing Ice House Site:

This pond has been here as long as Duxbury has been settled by colonists––as early as 1628. Island Creek flows into the pond, which was initially known as Little Island Creek Pond. First, the land was home to a grist mill, then an iron foundry due to the nearby iron deposits, then a tack factory, and then an ice house. The Cushing Ice House was a small structure that stored ice harvested from the pond in the late 1800s. This cache is on occupied territory of the Patuxet, Pokanoket, Massachusetts, and Wampanoag People.

To open the cache:

This cache owner is a lover of obscure history… the more unique the historical fact, the better. The lock on the cache needs 3 digits to open. It contains a logbook and small pencil.

First digit: The range, in nautical miles, of the lighthouse, which is neither in Duxbury nor on a pier.

Second digit: An ode to Honest Dick. Duxbury was home to the first student government, a school where you could fish from your desk. Now on the grounds sits a monument to Honest Dick. How many generations did the horse walk on the Weston ropewalk?

Third digit: Myles Standish was struck by lightning. And you can climb to see him. How tall are his legs, in feet?

All answers can be found online… or you can always go on a data-collecting boat ride (be sure to bring your VHF radio and the US Coast Guard Light List for the Atlantic Coast), you can visit Honest Dick (though his memorial was moved away from his resting place), or bring a measuring tape to the legs. But the internet might be easier. :)

Please note: This cache was placed with permission from the Duxbury Conservation Department. Cachers are encouraged to be vigilant when entering and exiting, as the cache is located off Route 3A (Tremont St) where the speed limit is 40. There is a little parking area and the cache is located safely away from the road. Please stay on conservation land and be wary of ticks and thorns!
