Anne Lister (3 April 1791 – 22 September 1840) was a unique woman of her time. She owned land with an impressive estate, and opened a coal mine on the property. She dressed in all black. She was well-educated and loved learning, especially about classic literature.
She loved traveling and went to many countries all over Europe. She ascended Monte Perdido, which at 11,007 ft (3,355 m), is the third highest peak in the Pyrenees. She also hiked the Vignemale (10,820 feet; 3,298 m), the highest peak in the French Pyrenees. This required a ten-hour hike to reach the top and another seven hours to descend. She also visited parts of Russia in which she needed a military escort, due to the political unrest in the area and that it was unusual for a Western European woman to visit this area.
Over the course of her life, she kept diaries about both her daily life and the events of her time. Her diaries total an impressive 5 million words! She wrote her most personal thoughts in her own private code. The code consists of a mix of Greek, Latin, mathematical symbols, punctuation and zodiac symbols.
With her love of traveling, exploration, and codes, she sounds like she would be a Geocacher in modern times!
Anne's diaries were hidden in the attic at her estate. They were discovered by her relative and deciphered between 1887-1892 but hidden again. Researchers obtained them in the 1960s and have published their research. The property and gardens have been preserved for their historical significance and you can visit them today in Shibden, West Yorkshire, England.
In 2011 Anne’s diaries received the accolade of being placed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register in recognition of their substantial cultural significance to the UK. They are an important resource in the field of Gender, Women's, and LGBTQ history, as well as providing a wealth of information about her era in politics, business, religion, education, science, travel, local and national events, medicine and health.
