In de jaren ’70 begon Eindhoven te groeien tot de moderne stad die we vandaag kennen. Wijken als de Woenselse Watermolen werden ontwikkeld als antwoord op de groeiende vraag naar woonruimte voor arbeidersgezinnen, studenten en jonge professionals. De wijk werd genoemd naar de oude watermolen die hier ooit langs de rivier de Gender stond – een molen die in de middeleeuwen essentieel was voor het malen van graan voor de inwoners van Woensel. Hoewel de molen al lang verdwenen is, leeft de naam voort in de straten en het karakter van de buurt.
Met de uitbreiding van de stad ontstond ook de behoefte aan efficiënter openbaar vervoer. Om het centrum bereikbaar te houden, werd er in de jaren '80 geëxperimenteerd met gescheiden busbanen: een vooruitstrevend concept waarbij bussen ongehinderd langs files konden rijden. Eén van de eerste van deze trajecten liep langs de Fontys Hogeschool, dwars door wat toen nog een relatief jonge woonwijk was.
Volgens lokale overlevering liep hier destijds een opzichter rond met een klein plastic kokertje, waarin hij zijn kaarten, berekeningen en persoonlijke aantekeningen bewaarde. Hij noteerde vreemde observaties: busritten die sneller verliepen dan technisch mogelijk was, passagiers die verdwenen vóór de eindhalte, en een onbekend symbool dat telkens opdook op bouwtekeningen — alsof iemand of iets hen voor was.
Toen het project werd afgerond, zou de opzichter dit kokertje hebben verstopt bij een van de haltes, als stille getuige van een tijdperk vol verandering. Slim en onopvallend bevestigd, wachtend op iemand met een scherp oog en snelle vingers.

🇬🇧 Busbaan Blitz – Traces of the Past in Woenselse Watermolen
In the 1970s, Eindhoven began its transformation into the modern city we know today. Neighborhoods like Woenselse Watermolen were developed to meet the growing demand for housing among working-class families, students, and young professionals. The district was named after an old water mill that once stood along the Gender stream — a mill that was essential in the Middle Ages for grinding grain for the people of Woensel. Although the mill has long since disappeared, its name lives on in the streets and the character of the neighborhood.
As the city expanded, so did the need for more efficient public transport. To keep the city center accessible, Eindhoven started experimenting with separated bus lanes in the 1980s — a forward-thinking concept that allowed buses to avoid traffic jams. One of the first of these routes passed by what is now Fontys University of Applied Sciences, cutting straight through what was then still a relatively new residential area.
According to local legend, a site supervisor used to walk around here with a small plastic tube, in which he kept his maps, calculations, and personal notes. He began recording strange observations: bus rides that were completed faster than technically possible, passengers who vanished before reaching the final stop, and a mysterious symbol that kept appearing on the blueprints — as if someone or something was always one step ahead.
When the project was finished, the supervisor is said to have hidden the tube at one of the bus stops — cleverly and discreetly. A silent witness to a time of change and unanswered questions, waiting for someone with a sharp eye and nimble fingers.
