A tér története 1959-ben kezdődött, amikor Zugló fejlesztésének keretében a virágzó bolgárkertészet, a sáros, poros földutak és bokros elhanyagolt tér közepén megnyílt egy tizenhat tantermes iskola. Az egyre növekvő tanulói létszám miatt ezt később négy teremmel bővítették és 1992-ben felvette a "Zuglói Arany János Általános Iskola" nevet.
The history of the square began in 1959, when, as part of the development of Zugló, a sixteen-classroom school was opened in the middle of the flourishing truck farm, muddy, dusty dirt roads and bushy neglected square. Due to the ever-increasing number of students, it was later expanded with four rooms and in 1992 it took on the name "Zuglói Arany János Primary School".
Pest, Buda, Óbuda egyesítésének 100. évfordulója alkalmából Zugló és Szolnok megye együttműködési szerződést írt alá. A megállapodásnak része volt az is, hogy Szolnok megye az Újvidék tér parkját pihenőparkká alakítja, amelyet Szolnok parknak neveznek el. A parképítés 1973. március 5-én kezdődött. A 12 ezer négyzetméteres területen a szolnokiak két sportpályát és egy játszóteret alakítottak ki, utakat létesítettek, kiépítették a közvilágítást, a területet virágokkal és növényzettel díszítették. A Szolnok park ünnepélyes avatását 1973. április 29-én tartották meg.
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the unification of Pest, Buda and Óbuda, Zugló and Szolnok regions signed a cooperation agreement. The agreement also included the fact that Szolnok county will transform the park at Újvidék tér into a recreation park, which will be named Szolnok park. The construction of the park began on March 5, 1973. In the 12,000 square meter area, the people of Szolnok created two sports fields and a playground, built roads, installed public lighting, and decorated the area with flowers and vegetation.
The ceremonial inauguration of Szolnok Park was held on April 29, 1973.
A XIV. kerületi tanács egy Pro urbe Szolnoktól 1873–1973 feliratú emlékművel köszönte meg a szolnokiaknak, hogy parkosították az Újvidék teret. Az emlékkövet a parkot átszelő Szugló utca közelében, a Variházy Oszkár utca felé vezető sétány mentén állították fel. (forrás: zuglo.hu)
The XIV. district council thanked the people of Szolnok for landscaping the Újvidék square with a monument with the inscription 'Pro urbe Szolnok 1873–1973'. The memorial stone was erected near Szugló utca, which crosses the park, along the walkway leading to Variházy Oszkár utca.

Simon Ferenc bronzba öntött, kalapos férfit ábrázoló portrészobra, amelyet a művész „Öreg paraszt” címmel illetett, 1974-ben került kihelyezésre a Variházy Oszkár utca melletti játszótérhez, a sétány mentén álló másfél méteres talapzatra. A szobor sajnos rövid időn belül eltűnt, és azóta csupán a talapzat maradt meg. Az itt látható képet egy korabeli fekete-fehér fotó alapján, mesterséges intelligencia segítségével rekonstruáltuk.
Ily módon szeretnénk bemutatni és digitálisan megőrizni a szobrász egykori alkotását az utókor számára.
Simon Ferenc's bronze portrait of a man wearing a hat - referred to by the sculptor as the statue titled "Old Peasant"—was installed in 1974 near the playground next to Variházy Oszkár Street, on a one-and-a-half-meter pedestal along the promenade. Unfortunately, the statue disappeared shortly afterward, and since then, only the pedestal remains visible. This image was created using artificial intelligence based on a period black-and-white photograph. With this, we aim to present and preserve the sculptor’s former work in digital eternity.
