THE BUND
Needs no introduction. Enjoy the view!
The Bund (Waitan in Chinese) is a stunning waterfront area in Shanghai. Nicknamed the "Exhibition of International Buildings," it features grand buildings from the early 1900s in various styles like Gothic, Baroque, and Art Deco. As you walk along the riverside promenade, you'll be struck by the contrast between these historic buildings and the futuristic skyscrapers of Pudong across the Huangpu River.
Here are some of the must-see buildings:
- No. 9 The Bund (mid-19th century): This is the oldest surviving building on The Bund and was once a foreign consulate.
- The Customs House (1927): This grand building with a clock tower was once the headquarters of the Chinese Maritime Customs Service.
- The Bank of China (1932): An Art Deco masterpiece known for its green and gold exterior and towering clock. It's a branch of the Bank of China and a popular photo spot.
- Sassoon Building (1929): This distinctive building with a stepped design was the headquarters of the Sassoon Shipping Company. Today, it's a luxurious hotel.
- HSBC Building (1928): This imposing building with a granite facade was once the headquarters of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. It's a busy office building today.
Beyond the architecture, The Bund offers a vibrant atmosphere. Enjoy afternoon tea, explore unique shops, or simply relax and people-watch. In the evenings, the Bund comes alive.
The Bund is a must-visit for anyone interested in Shanghai's history and stunning architecture. It's a place to soak up the city's energy and create lasting memories.
THE CACHE
The cache is a small 5ml tube. Dont look for it, feel for it :) Once found, go past it, and then pull it out. Be careful not to force it further up as it will then be very difficult to retrieve. If you have geocached before, the location will be obvious. It is at the bottom of stair 9. About 1.5 m high. Sorry for making the find soo descriptive, but loitering in this area will be suspicous!
Enjoy!
