Geocache Description:

The imposing  and beautiful building at 505 East Changzhi Road boasts a rich and storied past, recently reborn as the Design Innovation Institute Shanghai. Originally constructed in 1934, its journey began as the Henry Lester Institute of Technical Education.

Henry Lester Institute of Technical Education

A Philanthropist's Dream:

British tycoon Henry Lester, a man of great wealth and generosity, envisioned this institute as a place of learning for at least 300 students. Following his passing in 1926, his legacy lived on through this grand institution. Designed by Lester Johnson & Morriss Co., the building itself became a landmark, blending Gothic Revival and Art Deco styles.

A Pioneering Institution:

For a decade, the Henry Lester Institute played a pivotal role in Shanghai's educational landscape. It cultivated leading professionals, fostering a practical, hands-on approach to engineering education. Notably, teachers eschewed textbooks, encouraging students to learn from experience. The institute rivaled the likes of Jiao Tong and St. John's universities for excellence.

The Tides of Change:

The outbreak of World War II in 1945 disrupted the institute's operations. Occupied by Japanese forces in 1942, it faced a new chapter after the war. Transformed into a maritime technical school and later the Shanghai Seaman Hospital, the building continued to serve the community.

Preserving the Past, Embracing the Future:

Recognized for its historical significance, the building received protected status in 1994. In 2021, a meticulous renovation commenced, meticulously preserving over 70% of the original features. From the intricate tiles to the double-layered windows, the restoration aimed to recapture the institute's former glory.

A New Chapter Begins:

Today, the building stands tall as the Design Innovation Institute Shanghai. While its function has changed, the dedication to fostering knowledge and innovation remains. The institute aspires to be a hub for international design exchange and public education, propelling Shanghai towards a sustainable future. Standing on the balcony of the former headmaster's room, visitors can appreciate not only the building's preserved beauty but also the breathtaking North Bund skyline, a testament to the constant evolution of Shanghai itself.
