Northern Heights Park
Northern Heights Park is in northeast Rochester, MN. It is 49.0 acres, divided into two portions. The main park area, east of Northern Hills Drive NE, is undeveloped nature area and wetland. A single main trail bisects the park diagonally across the middle, and there is a smaller trailhead at the southwest corner (see waypoints). Both trails are unpaved. The park contains numerous deer trails that can be used as unmaintained hiking trails.
The main park can be divided into three distinct regions:
- Northwest of the main trail the terrain rises at a shallow-to-moderate grade. The area is generally dry and somewhat open, although this is relative. There has been recent work to clear out undergrowth just north of the main trail.
- The southern end of the park, south of a line running east-southeast from the western trail entrance, is more rugged than the northern portion. It contains several valley-like gulllies, varying terrain that includes steeper hillsides, and patches of thicker undergrowth.
- The middle portion of the park, southeast of the main trail, is low-lying wetlands. The ground can be very soft and muddy, and the undergrowth is thick in many places. Explore this area at your own risk, especially in the summer.
The southwest corner of the park is separated from the rest of the park by Northern Hills Drive NE. Unlike the rest of the park, is has been developed and contains tennis courts, a baseball field, and an ice rink.
