Harper Canyon is named for Lawrence Harper a native of Scotland who became a naturized citizen on November 19, 1889. He obtained 160 acres of land from the government in 1878 and added two additional purchases in 1892 and 1896.
San Benancio Canyon was first identified on a diseno (map) of Rancho El Toro in 1834. It was most likely named for one of four Saint Venantiuses.
