Bun venit la EarthCache-ul „Limestone of Lions Obelisk-Iași”!
Fă-i o scurtă descriere.

Welcome to the "Limestone of the Lions Obelisk-Iași" EarthCache!
Join me on a journey to explore the geological significance of the Lions Obelisk, a prominent landmark in Iași, Romania, and its connection to the intriguing limestone known as "Șcheia Stone."
Logging Tasks:
1. Observe the texture and color of the limestone on the Lions Obelisk and recognize "Șcheia Stone" limestone from the 6 pictures below. Describe it briefly.
2. Reflect on the Mesozoic era, the period when "Șcheia Stone" limestone was formed. What major geological events characterized this era and how might they have influenced the formation of the limestone?
3. Take a photo of yourself or your geocaching ID with the Lions Obelisk in the background. Attach it to your online log.
The Lions Obelisk, erected in 1841, stands as a symbol of Iași's rich cultural and historical heritage. Carved from "Șcheia Stone" limestone, it showcases the durability and aesthetic appeal of this locally sourced stone.
"Șcheia Stone" limestone is extracted from quarries near the village of Șcheia, located approximately 35 kilometers south of Iași. These quarries have been in operation for centuries, supplying limestone for various construction projects throughout the region.
"Șcheia Stone" is a sedimentary rock of carbonate origin, specifically a type of limestone. It is primarily composed of calcite and dolomite minerals, formed through the accumulation and lithification of calcium carbonate-rich sediments over millions of years. This rock was deposited during the Mesozoic era, particularly in the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods, when the region that is now Iași had a vastly different natural environment.
During the Mesozoic era, the Iași region was situated in the shallow marine basin of Sarmatian Sea, with warm, tropical waters teeming with marine life.

The deposition of calcium carbonate-rich sediments occurred as marine organisms such as corals, mollusks, and foraminifera built their skeletal structures from dissolved minerals in the seawater. Over time, these sediments accumulated on the seafloor and were gradually compacted and cemented to form the limestone rocks we see today as "Șcheia Stone".
The compact texture and characteristic yellowish color of "Șcheia Stone" are indicative of its high purity and relatively low impurity content. Its durability and resistance to weathering make it a favored material for various construction applications, including monuments like Lions Obelisk.
Overall, "Șcheia Stone" represents an important geological resource in the region, reflecting the complex interplay of sedimentation, diagenesis, and tectonic processes that have shaped the landscape of Iași area over geological time scales.
