This is a nice walk starting at the car park by the Dam leading along the reservoir into a nature reserve and back along a quite road to the car park.
Unfortunately the path doesn’t go all the way around the reservoir in a circle so when locating the caches decided to take you guys on an adventure along as far as possible, into the woods through a nature reserve and up a path where you get a great view of the whole reservoir. After it’s a nice easy downhill back to the carpark. The loop is about 4km. It starts off on a nice flat wide path by the lake suitable for prams but once it leaves this path it goes into woodland (after cache 3) which can get muddy and has a few fallen trees. We managed to get through with our all-terrain buggy. Once out the woods (cache 5) its all hard standing small tracks and roads suitable for vehicles. The route takes you near some great caches by other users but please don’t scale any fences gates are available further down the path. Unfortunately dogs aren’t allowed on the nature reserve. Mountain Bikes can get through but can be a challenge in places.
About the Dam
Porth Reservoir is a reservoir in Cornwall, England, most of which is in the parish of Colan. The concrete dam was completed in 1960, and the lake has a net capacity of approximately 113,000,000 gallons (514,000,000 litres).[1]
The reservoir has an area of about 40 acres (0.16 km2), and a perimeter of approximately 3 miles (4.8 km). It now operates as a coarse fishery, with a nature reserve at one end.
The reservoir is principally fed by the small river that starts near Ruthvoes, about 4 miles (6 km) to the east. From the reservoir's outlet, the river flows to St Columb Porth, where it enters the sea.
Construction of the reservoir and dam was carried out by the Newquay & District Water Company. It was officially opened on 16 June 1960 by A. C. McLellan, then president of the Institution of Water Engineers.
