Northeast Iowa had their very own "John Wayne", even before the famous star of western TV and movies became popular. His name was Percy Haven (1903-1994). He was a legendary lawman that was the sheriff of Howard County for 14 terms, retiring in 1973. He was formidable but fair, well respected, had an overpowering presecnce, and was a true gentleman. He was a fixture in the community and was always seen wearing his cowboy hat with the badge on it.

Percy loved his sports cars! It was quite the sight to see Percy, who was a very, very, tall man get into a very, very, small automobile. His patrol car was a black Firdbird. He also drove a Corvair Monza convertible. Rumor has it that he liked to drag race with his new car to see how fast it would go!

A friend of Percy told the story of an accident near Davis Corners. Mayo doctors were on the scene, but they couldn't stop the bleeding on one of the injured. This friend told Percy that he knew how to stop the bleeding, but didn't think the Mayo medics would listen to him. He told Percy that Doc Buresh from Lime Springs advised him to apply pepper to a wound to stop the bleeding. So Percy went to the nearby Davis Corner Store, bought a tin of pepper, and gave it to the medics. They wanted to know what to do with it. He told them to pour the pepper on the wound to stop the bleeding, They did and it worked! From then on, Percy always carried a tin of pepper in his car.

Percy was married to a classy lady named Gladys. They had two children, Burnell, and Helene. After a time, Burnell "Bernie" followed in his father's footsteps, becoming a State Trooper in Independence, IA. Bernie was also well-loved and had the prestigious honor of being given the first ever "Trooper of the Year Award" in 1971.

Percy always treated others with respect. He was well loved and admired. He inspired many others to go into law enforcement.

To find the final cache container, you will go to the posted coordinates where Percy and Gladys were laid to rest. As you look directly behind their gravestone, you will see a smaller brown stone. What is the surname of the couple buried there? Enter that into the certitude checker below to get the coordinates to the final.

You can validate your puzzle solution with certitude.
