About this series: Can you name the Hudson River Bridges? The bridge formerly known as the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge is a steel cantilever bridge spanning the Hudson River between Highland and Poughkeepsie. Built as a double-track railroad bridge, it was completed on January 1, 1889. With a total length of 6,767 feet, it was for a short time the longest bridge in the world. The bridge was taken out of service on May 8, 1974, after it was damaged by fire. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and was designated as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2009. On October 3, 2009, it was reopened as the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park. (Sources: walkway.org and asce.org)
