Die Idee zum Findlingsgarten kam auf, als bei der Erschließung des Baugebiets „Neue Gartenstadt“ dieser riesiger Findling entdeckt wurde. Vor 16.000 Jahren wurde er durch eiszeitliche Gletscher dort abgelagert. Bei dem Riesen handelt es sich um einen grauen Granodiorit. Er hat einen Umfang von 12 Metern, sowie ein Gewicht von etwa 38 Tonnen.
Diese Fakten machen diesen grauen Granodiorit zum bisher größten gefunden Findling im Schweriner Stadtgebiet. Aufgrund dieser Größe ist er auch als Geotop ausgewiesen und daher ein geschütztes Relikt der glazialen Erdgeschichte.
Neben dem massigen Granodiorit findet ihr hier auch andere große Findlinge vor. Eine kleine Metall-Tafel neben jedem Findling informiert euch über Gesteinsnamen, Alter und Herkunftsland. Leider sind nicht mehr alle Tafeln gut lesbar.
Ein kleiner Teil der Gesteinsoberfläche wurde bei jedem Findling poliert, sodass man die verschiedenen mineralischen Komponenten des Gesteins gut erkennen kann.

Die Schleifmühle
Du möchtest sehen, wie Granit geschnitten und poliert wird?
Seit über dreihundert Jahren dreht sich das Rad der Wassermühle am Auslauf des Faulen Sees. Von 1749 bis 1857 schnitten, schliffen und polierten hier geschickte Hände Steine für die Fürsten Mecklenburg-Schwerins, vorwiegend Findlinge.
Heute ist die historische Wassermühle mit unterschlächtigem Wasserrad ein Museum mit Schauanlage für die historische Granitverarbeitung des 18./19. Jahrhunderts und sie ist einzigartig in Europa. Hier gibt es regelmäßig Ausstellungen und Vorträge zu geologischen Themen. Informiere dich im Internet zu den Öffnungszeiten.

The idea for the boulder garden came about when this huge boulder was discovered during the development of the “Neue Gartenstadt” development area. It was deposited there by Ice Age glaciers 16,000 years ago. The giant is a gray granodiorite. It has a circumference of 12 meters and a weight of around 38 tons.
These facts make this gray granodiorite the largest boulder found so far in the Schwerin city area. Due to this size, it is also designated as a geotope and is therefore a protected relic of the earth's glacial history.
In addition to the massive granodiorite, you will also find other large boulders here. A small metal plaque next to each boulder informs you about the rock name, age and country of origin. Unfortunately, not all of the boards are easy to read.
