Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the posted coordinates.

The cacher's friend, the wild blackberry or bramble (Rubus fruticosus) is a thorny rambling shrub with the stems (canes) reaching 2 metres or more. The pink or white flowers appear from late spring to early summer, followed by the fruit in mid-late summer, though they are at their sweetest later in the season. Each “fruit” is actually an aggregate of drupelets, not a berry, and remain attached to a white core when picked. They belong to the rose family, along with raspberries and apples.

The blackberry is native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, and can be found across the UK in most habitats. In ancient times, it was used in Britain as a natural “barbed wire” for boundaries.

Blackberries are a good food source for humans and animals; during the American Civil War there would be temporary truces to allow both sides to harvest the fruit. The leaves are eaten by various insects and deer, while birds and mammals favour the berries.

According to folklore, blackberries should not be picked after Old Michaelmas Day (11th October) as it is said that Satan fell out of Heaven, landing in a bramble bush on that date, and so cursed the fruit. I’m sure most cachers can sympathise. Despite this association, blackberries are thought to protect against evil.

On the Isle of Mann, the first fruits are left for the fairies; failure to do this risks the berries being infested with grubs.
