Welcome to the Welcome Series - a series of caches located in places I remember growing up in this area
Welcome To The Ruskin General Store
For more than 60 years this site housed The Ruskin General Store. Built in 1922, it saw 14 different sets of owners supplying everything from mining equipment to housewares. This was the place to stop for candy, pop, snacks and cigarettes too.
The store was an object of interest for artists or tourists who would sketch or photograph the building. Some of these items can still be found on eBay or in local shops as greeting cards and on the cover of a local history book.
Sadly the building was purchased in 1981 by the Ministry of Highways and torn down to make room for the widening highway. An attempt was made to have building designated as a historial landmark but this did not receive much interest at the time.
Please do not park on the side of the Lougheed Highway. There is safe roadside parking on 287th st.
The cache is a regular size with room for a log and writing instrument.
