Well known in his field, Stephen Jay Gould was an American paleontologist, evolutionary biologist and historian of science. He was known for his theory of "punctuated equilibrium' that was developed with Niles Eldredge in 1972. The theory proposes that once a species appears in the fossil record, the population will become stable, showing little evolutionary change for most of its geological history. This state of little or no morphological change is called stasis.
