Here's a geocache located along the Western Canal. There's not many caches along this section of the canal, so I will be adding some more in the future. Located at ground zero is some interesting history on the Western Canal along with a map that shows how all the canals are connected.
Western Canal, constructed 1911 - 1913, 20.6 miles long.
The Western Canal Construction Company built eight miles of this section of the Western Canal to deliver water to South Phoenix famers and ranchers. By pumping water uphill to the Highline Canal, farmers could cultivate many more acres at the base of South Mountain.

From the 1920s through the 1980s, Japanese flower growers --- the Iwakoshi, Kishiyama, Mariyama, Nakagawa, Nakamura, Sakato, and Watanabe families --- grew bachelor buttons, larkspur, carnations, asters, sweetpeas, and stock.
Farming faded as commercial and residential development grew along Baseline Road, including this spot, once a cotton field watered by the Western, which became the South Mountain Community College in the 1980s.
