Vielä ennen sotia Reposaaren kaduilla liikkui vain kaksi autoa, konepajan kuorma-auto ja paloauto.
Mäntyluodon sataman valot loistivat vain kivenheiton päässä, mutta matka mantereelle saattoi olla sitkeyttä kysyvä kokemus.
Vilkkaan 3 000 asukkaan satama- ja sahateollisuusyhdyskunnan huoltaminen alkoi tuntua ylivoimaiselta ilman tieyhteyttä.
Ennätysmaisen nopeasti edennyt tiehanke, jota aikoinaan väitettiin Suomen kalleimmaksi lähti ??.??.???? alkuun opetusneuvos Hugo Nuorsaaren tekemästä eduskunta-aloitteesta. Jo 19. lokakuuta samana vuonna ensimmäiset autot saattoivat ajaa mantereelta Reposaareen, jossa tapahtuman kunniaksi oli nostettu siniristiliput salkoon.
Pengertien sillat olivat vielä rakentamatta, mutta yli päästiin väliaikaista ponttonisiltaa.
Linja-autoliikennekin sujui aluksi niin, että matkustajat kävelivät lankkuja myöten sillan toisessa päässä odottavaan autoon.
Nykyinen nostosilta valmistui maaliskuussa 1957.

As a mystery:
Even before the wars, there were only two cars on the streets of Reposaari, a machine shop truck and a firetruck.
The lights of Mäntyluoto harbour shone just a stone's throw away,
but the journey to the mainland could be an experience that required perseverance.
Maintaining a bustling port and sawmill community of 3,000 inhabitants began to seem overwhelming without a road connection.
The road project, which progressed at record speed and was once claimed to be the most expensive in Finland, began ??.??.???? with a parliamentary initiative by Education Councillor Hugo Nuorsaari.
As early as 19 October of the same year, the first cars could drive from the mainland to Reposaari,
where the blue cross flags had been hoisted in honour of the event.
The embankment bridges had not yet been built, but a temporary pontoon bridge was used to cross.
Bus traffic initially operated by walking along the planks to a waiting car at the other end of the bridge. The current drawbridge was completed in March 1957.
