O marks the spot

6. Not far past the sign you should see these logs to your left, and this bridge just ahead on the right. The cache is located behind the logs.

Lake Michigan from the Dunes

Warren Dunes State Park

Warren Dunes State Park provides 1,500 acres of recreational opportunities along the beautiful shore of Lake Michigan. Its rugged dune formation, rising 260 feet above the lake, offers spectacular views and is excellent for hang gliding (permit is required). The park is home to 3 miles of shoreline, 6 miles of hiking trails and two popular campgrounds.

The unofficial gateway to Michigan’s state park system from the west, the park is home to an extensive network of richly forested dunes, large open dunes and interdunal wetlands. It also features significant bird diversity because it is a stopover location on a bird migration route.

Activity: Camping

The modern campground is divided into two loops. The campground offers a variety of site types and sizes, including shady and sunny, and some are wooded. Recycling is available.

The semi-modern campground is more rustic and offers a relaxing atmosphere. Most sites are sunny and open, while some are wooded and more private. There is no electrical service available. Vault toilets are centrally located in the campground; however, three modern toilet and shower buildings are available for use in the Mt. Randall modern campground, just a five-minute walk away. Recycling is available.

There are three rustic cabins in the Mt. Randall campground. Each cabin sleeps six people and includes two full-size beds and two single bunk beds. You’ll find a table, bench seat and ceramic heater. A small deck, picnic table, fire pit and waist-high cook grill (only cooking unit provided) can be found outdoors. The cabins have electricity. You must provide your own linens and cookware.

MSPGT2 - Southern Lower Peninsula Edition

Michigan’s Southern Lower Peninsula is a hub for outdoor adventure, with state parks, trails, and waterways that showcase the region’s natural beauty and diverse landscapes. From sandy beaches along the shores of Lake Michigan to serene inland lakes and winding rivers, there’s something for everyone to explore.

State parks like Holland, Muskegon, and Grand Haven offer stunning stretches of Lake Michigan shoreline perfect for swimming, picnicking, and catching sunsets. Inland, Yankee Springs Recreation Area features miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, fishing spots, and campsites. Waterloo and Pinckney Recreation Areas are favorites for backpackers and kayakers, with scenic routes like the Potawatomi Trail and waterways like the Huron River.

For paddlers, the Grand, Kalamazoo, and St. Joseph Rivers provide calm waters ideal for kayaking and canoeing. Fishing enthusiasts will find plentiful opportunities in the area’s lakes and streams. Trails such as the Kal-Haven and Mike Levine Lakelands Trail cater to cyclists, runners, and walkers, weaving through picturesque countryside and historic towns.

In winter, these trails transform into snowshoeing and cross-country skiing destinations, while parks like Fort Custer provide winter hiking and fat-tire biking options.

With its blend of rolling hills, forests, wetlands, and shorelines, Michigan’s Southern Lower Peninsula offers a diverse outdoor playground. Whether you're seeking adventure, relaxation, or family fun, the region’s state parks, trails, and waterways promise an unforgettable experience.
