Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a series of caches which are placed at or near village halls and community centres. For details and statistics visit the Village Hall Series website Click here

This Carnkie (there is another between Rame and Helston) is a small hamlet in the parish of Carn Brea lying along the geological feature known as the Great Flat Lode, which gives a big clue as to why it is here at all. Wandering along the main street, you can see many examples of miner's cottages surrounded by various relics of a once great minig industry, much of it owned by Lord de Dunstanville and Basset of Tehidy whose monument stands on the summit of Carn Brea to the NW. The other prominent feature to be seen is the tall TV mast that dominates the view to the SE.

The hamlet had the necessary Methodist chapel which can still be seen just a few doors down, but which closed its doors in 2010, the worshippers now meeting in the subject of this cache. Carnkie was also the birthplace of D M Thomas (1935-2023), poet, translator, editor, novelist, biographer and playwright, perhaps best known for his novel The White Hotel, which was runner up in the 1981 Booker Prize to Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children.

The Carnkie Community Institute, as the hall is known, was laid down in 1824 and has remained at the centre of village life ever since and is still a regular meeting place for several clubs. Although the facade is not of particular architectural interest, it does boost some interesting information boards that you will need to study in order to gain some of the required answers - this shouldn't be too much of a hardship and you learn some interest things about the area as a bonus.

THE CACHE is a simple offset Multi. The headline co-ordinates will bring you to the front of the building where there may be parking available if the hall isn't in use. All the answers can be found here. Simply gather the required information and then enter it into the formula to get the final co-ordinates.

1. How is the clock kept on time? Two words, take initial letters and convert to numbers using a standard communication method - AB

2. What date in October 1924 were the Foundation stones laid? C

3. Three men are honoured on the WW2 Memorial plaque. How many letters are in the shortest surname ? D

4. How many landlords of the "Countryman" have there been "to date". EF

N50 1B.(C-E)D(F) W005 1(2XB).AE(F-E)   Checksum of A-F is 29

The final is only a short stroll away within sight of the hall.
