Geocache Description:

25 May 2024, 10:00 - 11:00

4th of July CITO

Cache In Trash Out® (CITO) is an environmental initiative supported by the geocaching community. Since 2002, CITO has helped preserve the natural beauty of cache-friendly spaces. In that time, more than 600,000 people have volunteered at over 33,000 Events.

Actions often speak louder than words. By participating in a CITO Event, whether by collecting trash, planting trees, or crafting new homes for pollinators, we make our world a better place. Each CITO we attend is a testament to care: care for others, our communities, and our planet.

Don't confuse the name of this event with the date, as the name reflects the location.

Captain Mullan and his crew celebrated the 4th of July 1861 on top of this mountain as they took a break from clearing passage for the road they were building over it. Thus the current name of "4th of July Pass" today.

The Mullan Road was the first wagon road to cross the Rocky Mountains to the Inland of the Pacific Northwest. It was built by U.S. Army Captain John Mullan between the spring of 1859 and summer 1862. It led from Fort Benton, Montana, to Fort Walla Walla, Washington Territory, and it roughly follows the path of modern-day Interstate-90 through the Rockies.
