Geocache Description:

Crosswinds Marsh: A to Z

(Water Scorpion)

Water scorpions, members of the Nepidae family, are aquatic insects found in freshwater habitats worldwide. Despite their name, they are not true scorpions but belong to the order Hemiptera, known as true bugs. These fascinating insects are characterized by their elongated bodies and long, slender breathing tubes, which they use to access air while submerged. Water scorpions typically inhabit slow-moving or stagnant bodies of freshwater, such as ponds, marshes, and slow-moving streams, where they lurk among aquatic vegetation or debris, waiting to ambush their prey.
Water scorpions undergo incomplete metamorphosis, progressing through three stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Females lay their eggs on aquatic vegetation or other submerged surfaces, where they are protected from predators. Once hatched, the nymphs resemble miniature versions of the adults but lack wings and reproductive organs. Nymphs undergo several molts as they grow, gradually developing wings and reproductive structures. The entire lifecycle from egg to adult can take several weeks to months, depending on environmental conditions and species. Water scorpions play important roles in freshwater ecosystems as predators, helping to regulate populations of aquatic invertebrates.
